I think that a piezo would sound marvelous in the Flax. Using for example the gotoh tune-omatic, it would easy to install piezo-saddles instead of regular ones (especially in the flat neckangle, with the recess, since there is then a small hole underneath the tunomatic through which the cables can be routed. I have also done alot of investigating into piezo-powered synth systems, that apparently trigger much better then say a Roland system. But for starters, a regular piezo would be amazing I think (especially in a Liekki with a F-hole to add bottom warmth to the piezo chime).

Damn, I really got to wondering about the fretless option you mentioned in your mail. I'd imagine the sustain would be significant because of the stronger resonance of flaxwood. Any interest?

Yeah man :) I'm really thinking about it alot! And I bet you even more so, that are already accustomed to playing fretless. For me it's more about being inspired to write music just by hearing the thing. I would love to use a Flaxwood like that for my next album! (I was planning to use alot of turkish instruments on that one, as well as heavy synths and samplebased rhythms.).

I also belive that the material of the Flaxwood would make it perfect for fretless work. Possible incoorporating more carbon fibbre in the neck to have a harder surface, more like the laquered ebony that is common on such instruments. However, is using jazzstrings (smooth), I think that the Flaxwood necks, as is, would work just fine. Time for a talk with Veijo? ;)

I was thinking about speaker cabinets made of the flaxwood material, last night and maybe a "green-power" amp - low power consumption, shell made of flaxwood and so forth. Since ecologically friendly technology is on the rise, or will be within the next years it might be of interest in working together with an amp-manufacturer and hit the market before others will. (If they ever think about such things.)
The "ecologically friendly" aspect of the Flaxwood guitars should be advertised more heavily, I believe.

As for the guitars: 24 frets would certainly appeal to many of the non-tradionalist players and you might consider offering a scalloped fretboard option as well.

Fretless necks could be fine. (I was thinking of Bumblefoot... he can do some tricks on his fretless guitar ;o)

The afore-mentioned flatwound guitar strings (jazzstrings) would be lovely, though being somewhat stiffer than roundwound strings they tend to pose problems with some bridges (wrap-around, string-through body). But should work with LP-style bridges. At least that's what my experience tells me concerning 12-56 gauged flatwound strings.

I would like to backtrack and add my vote for a Piezo bridge. Would it be possible to get the fine people at schaller to build that option into that fantastic trem bridge?
As for a 24 fret neck, I would like that if it didn't alter the scale and mess with the pickup position.
Fretless neck?- Sounds like an interesting option. Are they easier to play that Cellos? I sure hope so!!

The piezo/trem combination is one we'll definitely be looking at, so that is something that we will talk to our suppliers about. Sure hope Schaller can provide us with one!

I have already scouted a replacement for my tune-omatic :) GHOST, makes replacement bridges, and thei rpiezo is top-notch (had one in an old Schecter C1 E/A that kicked some major bee's hind. And it's not only for piezo, you can get the same thing with full Midi-capabilities (just add a certain midi-circuitboard and you there). It also triggers better than midiguitar systems such as Roland. One thing however, it is easy to rout the cables down into the body, when you have a tuneomtac bridge and low neckprofile (since there is a small hole under the birdge then), but as for piezo with the Schaller trems, they don't build anything with midi capability to my knowledge. Anyways, here's a link:

David, as one old enough to remember LRB from the 70s("Have you heard about the lonesome loser...") I was tickled pink by your exchange and picture with D Briggs. How wonderful to have you evangelising on our behalf down under !
By the way, I'm just back from the factory, and all I can say is....there are "interesting developments" on the horizon....
Granted, that's pretty vague, but if I told ya any more 'bout it now, I'd probably have to kill ya....So I'll have to tell you about our new model later in time (ooops, did I just say that ?!)
Thanks David, keep the oz-reports coming thru ! Kim

Couple of days ago a spoke with my local instrument dealer about Flaxwood guitars. (He displayed that Flyer-cum-CD) He told me that while the guitars look shiney, feel extremely well and sound awesomme when played clean, he found the EMG equipped Vasara inappropriately called "metal guitar" as to the body resonance feedback problems (whatever you call it) at very hi-gain levels he tested it with...
Now in the FAQ you stated that Flaxwood models are prone to resonance feedback problems as any other guitar.
I thought these problems occur when played directly in front of an amp at high volume settings and usually with semi-acoustics to acoustics... whatever.

Anyway, I think he was not happy about the label "metal guitar" and sadly didn't take any of the models from the distributor. So, no chance for an occasional visit to the store and playing a Flaxwood. And no chance other local players will come to experience your guitars...
but then... David Carr seems to do some good job at promoting among players :o)

So, when I'm in Berlin in August, do I need to fly to Finland and beat up Kim to find out about the new Model?
