My fave Extreme album is Three Sides ;)
(I'm also a HUGE King's X fan :)
Hey Jussi, a thought, I'll make sure to equip my Flaxwood with the Nuno setup, XL500L in bridge and L500R in neck before I come over to Helsinki in Aug/Sep. Then we can A/B test some Flax's and you can form an oppinion about BL's in the Flaxwood.

Hi,

in general I think my Rautia is an excellent guitar but I have one suggestion for improvement which I personally already have done to my guitar and really like.

Replace the Gotoh bridge with a Tonepros wrap-around bridge.

It has the advantage of improving the sustain and tone of the guitar as well as making it possible to more accurately adjust intonation since it can be done separately for each string.

Not to forget that the bridge sits in place even when you remove the strings!

Hey Mats!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to talk to Veijo about it once he gets back from his vacation.

And welcome aboard, we need active forum people!

Adjusting the intonation for each individual string is a good thing. What about roller-saddles? Schaller offers some STM roller Bridge that allows string width adjustment as well.

I also think that a bridge with individual saddle adjustments would be good. Not that the Gotoh unit doesn't work but it is a bit fiddly to adjust.

As for EMGs, I'd say forget them. These days most metal amps have so over the top gain levels that there is really not much need for hot active pickups.

I play a Diezel Einstein combo and have had no problems with feedback with the Flaxwood Rautia even with metal tones.

Hey Laxu, good to see you in the forum bro :) How are things? Still planning a Helsinki visit in September, so let's stay in touch for that. Did you have my msn? richard@fretdance.com

The Schaller LP's offer single string intonation adjustment, which is a marked advantage to the fixed bridges we've had on the guitars, true. I'm not too keen on EMGs (or active electronics in general, for that matter) myself. It's true what you say about the gain levels in modern amps -- a metally session I did with a Rautia through a ENGL Fireball had me laughing out loud at the ridiculous amount of gain in the sucker! To each his own, obviously. It's just that, with over-the-top saturation, where are you going to get definition into your tone?

With Bill Lawrence dear Sir, with Bill Lawrence ;) Insane definition and clarity regardless of gain levels. Might sound like I'm only pushing positives about these pups, but they really are that good. Let's break out a bunch of Flax's when we meet, and we can A/B to our hearts content :)

Actually, I put this in another thread in this section, but the Gotoh 510UB bridge on Flaxwoods does have individual string intonation adjustment (see pic).

Regarding the EMG's and the feedback problems, the last time I talked to Veijo about this, we were discussing the fact that because of the nature of flaxwood as a material, and its stronger resonance as compared to traditional wood, combined with the semi-hollow body, just makes for a cocktail prone to feed back at ultra-high gain (and volume) levels when playing through active pickups with as high an output level as EMG '81s or '85s. Whether or not Flaxwoods (Vasara and Äijä) will continue to feature EMGs or not, that is still not decided, but we are working to find a solution.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Might something like feedback-killers for archtop-guitars work, if you fill out the whole acoustic-chamber with that stuff?
But I'm not a luthier. Just an idea.

The Gotoh-bridge looks nice :o)
