STARTER MESSAGE 10.07.2007, 00:55

I was just writing an e-mail to Richard Lundmark, pedal-talk. Started wondering, what do you guys play through?

My setup:

Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
BOSS TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
Modded Dunlop Crybaby 535Q wah
Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster
BOSS FDR-1 Deluxe Reverb
BOSS DD-20 Digital Delay
Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive
Visual Sound H2O Chorus / Echo

into a Bogner Shiva with a 2x12" cabinet. Obviously, the fx chain varies depending on the gig.

Favorites, recommendations?

changes alot :)
Currently I'm into pedals.
Noah's Ark Distortion "B"
Hughes&Kettner Tube Factor
THinking about a DUncan Tweak Fuzz
Weeping Demon wah
Line6 TOneport (with amp-modelling)
15 w (20 year old) squier amp :P

As for amps, right now I'm trying to scout for a good
tube combo. I will want to try your Lehrnert this fall Jussi :P

Also, The modded Crybaby, is that the Stinkfoot mod?
ANy good?

Howdy, Private!

The Crybaby mod I did has less to do with sound and tone than practicality. It was the older 535Q with the Q and Boost pots on the bottom of the pedal, so when I put together my pedal board and mounted it on there I just drilled holes through the side and moved the pots there so I could adjust them without dismounting the pedal. I'm also big on using the wah as a filter, which if you can't hear yourself loud and clear on stage, can result in it being accidentally left on, so I put a red LED on there so I know when the damn thing is on.

How's the Tweak Fuzz? It's the yellow one, right?

aaah, message received sir!
I'm also big into using a wah as a tone-filter. Guys like Blues Saraceno has always been my motto when breaking out the wah.

Yup, it's the yellow one, I haven't bought it yet, but I'm seriously considering it. The Tube Factor also sounds great, from everythign from metal to blues, but I'm gearing more towards funk and fusion fuzz nowadays.

Also, I found some VERY cool looking pickups :P
Check this babies out (both for single and hum).

Uuuh, guitarfetish.com. Kink-ay! Looking good.

I think my wah filter tendencies come from 70's Uli Roth mostly. He never used it in the clichéd 'pump the gas on the beat' way of playing -- it was always more subtle than that. His tone on something like "Longing for Fire"... wow.

My ideal tone used to something like Ty Tabor, Nuno, Saraceno and Holdsworth. But, since playing Flaxwood, I've found myself gravitating more and more towards tones like Joe Bonamassa. LOTS of string, clarity, separation and very well separated.

Well, now for my humble setup:

it's a
Hughes&Kettner Tube 50

I've got some pedals that I don't use:
Boss CH1 Super Chorus
Marshall Edward - The Compressor
Ibanez Fuzz Tonelok
Morley Pro Series Wah II (which is one great wah-wah, but I don't use it very often...)

The chorus is nice. I don't know what to make of the compressor... don't like it. The Fuzz is very fuzzy... not my kind.

So, I like some good effects since it sometimes inspires to make some interesting music, but I usually play clean with some slight overdrive/crunch from the amp and some reverb. I'm not a purist, though, I just don't have the right effect boxes nor an opportunity to actually incorporate them into my music.

How's the H&K? Haven't really ever sat down with one of their amps.

The H&K Tube 50 is lovely. I find many people who have nothing but a shrug of their shoulders for H&K, and I can't say anything about the other models but the Tube 50 is easy to use, has a power amp features which lets you turn down the wattage or whatever that is (nice if you practice at home), comes with a built-in DI box etc.

I get what I want from it. Which is not much I guess, and to be honest I haven't played too many amps so I wouldn't say it's the best. But I'm quite happy with it. It's the first amp I bought and I intend to keep and play it for some years.

I would like to start off here with amps. I always use old valve amps I can run into distortion, so my stage volume is set by the power of the amp. At small venues I pull out a homemade 15 watt head. Next in line (volume wise) is a 1959 Moody 25 watt head, followed by a '61 Fender Bassman. The volume king is my 1971 JMP Marshall Superlead.
Having said that, things will change now because I'm now the proud owner of a Carr amp from the US. It was quite a bizarre experience as a hobby amp builder (with friends saying I should market my own designs) to run into Steve Carr at NAMM 07. He is a great bloke who hand builds interesting stuff and bent over backward to help me get a Hammerhead combo.
Now, I simply plug my pedal board, select a clean tone and turn the Hammerhead up until it starts to drive; volume is set!
I could get all gooshy now and try to describe the the 1st 10 minutes after it arrived, Liekki in hand, volume on 11 and the Cat running for cover!

Damn you vintage buff... that Bassman I wouldn't mind having. ;) That Carr & Carr combo seems like an interesting duo. Fate?
